A Star Is Not Born: The Golden Globes 2019
The Golden Globes this year, in my opinion, proved the be more of a mix of disaster and heavy emotion. Sandra Oh, overwhelmed with emotion, was clearly the highlight of the show, while Andy Samberg’s nice-roast left me staring blankly at the screen. This one was also the year of upsets, in which (in my completely humble and unbiased opinion) Sharp Objects was completely ROBBED. Some movies that were nominated really shouldn't have been, and people are still pretty pissed on the internet about A Star Is Born not winning Best Picture. As time passes, the Golden Globes seem to be taken less and less serious, as celebs (as they rightfully should) get completely hammered and then mess up reading from the teleprompter; whereas the Academy Awards seem like the older, more mature brother of awards shows.
However, I mostly watch award shows for two reasons: First, I’m a huge movie and TV buff, and the commercials in between literally show everything that is coming up this year. True Detective Season 3, Big Little Lies Season 2, Watchmen (insanely stoked on that one!), Euphoria, Game of Thrones’ final season, and Fosse/Verdon are all gracing my TV in the next couple of months and I can’t wait. But more on that later.
The second reason is that I can finally sit in my sweats and judge people’s outfits from a distance. This year was fairly disappointing when it comes to red carpet looks. I have picked out a few notable ones, and a few that should have been left at home.
But above all else, last night's chaotic show makes me wonder whether Hollywood still takes the Golden Globes seriously, or whether Hollywood's rise in social, political, and artistic communities requires a more dignified occasion. Am I alone in thinking this? Leave me a comment below!!
